Head-on collision kills one, part of Highway 63 closed

UPDATE: The Missouri State Highway Patrol has released to KTVO the name of the person killed in Thursday morning's fatal crash three miles north of Macon.

The victim is identified as Sterling E. Owens, 62, of Hannibal, Missouri.

The patrol said Owens was driving a pickup truck on Highway 63 when he crossed the center line and struck an oncoming tractor-trailer head-on.

The semi was driven by Dennis Armstrong, 49, of Rockford, Illinois. Armstrong was not injured.

Owens was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.


A fatal collision Thursday morning shut down Highway 63 north of Macon.

A highway patrol trooper told KTVO that around 8:30 a.m., a pickup truck was headed north when it collided with a tractor trailer head-on. The driver of the pickup truck was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the semi was not injured in the crash.

A portion of Highway 63 was shut down to traffic until just before 1:30 p.m.

The name of the pickup truck driver will be released when family members are notified.
