Heartland business giving back to unemployed residents

One local business is helping give back to those in need this holiday season.

Bridge City Appliances in Ottumwa will hold its first ever "Last Man Standing $5,000 Product Giveaway" Contest. The competition is open to anyone who is currently unemployed. Contestants will place their hand on a delivery truck that will be full of appliances worth about $5,000. The last person with their hand on the truck will win. They won't receive help.

Anyone interested must show proof of unemployment in order to register. Appliances include a T.V., stand, bed, washer and dryer, along with much more.

Owner Chris McKeag said no one else is offering this kind of giveaway. The community has supported his business for a long time and its his way of giving back to them.

"I wouldn't be able to do this if it wasn't for the community and the surrounding towns. This is something I love to do; but I also want to give back to somebody that truly needs it."

"It lets you know exactly how many people are out there on unemployment. I think its going to be a really good thing for the community. I'd love to be able to do this in the future too."

McKeag already has several people registered. The contest will start at 10 a.m. and he encourages people to come early and dress warm. To learn more call Bridge City T.V. & Appliance at 641-682-2489 or visit
