Heartland gathering breaks world record
Guinness World Records notified the Fairfield RAGBRAI committee this week that they have successfully achieved a new Guinness World Records title for, â??Largest gathering of people wearing false moustachesâ??.
The gathering on July 26 was part of the activities and promotions for RAGBRAIâ??s overnight stay in Fairfield. Nearly 2,500 people gathered on the Jefferson County Courthouse lawn to participate in the attempt along with about 70 volunteers, photographers and videographers who helped create the paperwork and evidence needed to verify the attempt. In the end, the committee was able to verify 2,268 people as participants, beating out the last record holders in Grand Rapids, Michigan who recorded a total of 1,532 participants.
â??Establishing a world record was a huge undertaking on top of the already exciting event of RAGBRAIâ?? said Terry Baker, assistant director of the Fairfield Iowa Convention & Visitors Bureau, RAGBRAI committee member and world record attempt organizer. â??The attempt generated much enthusiasm from the riders, visitors and residents, making it well worth the effort.â??
The Fairfield RAGBRAI committee and the City of Fairfield will be receiving an official Guinness World Records certificate in the coming weeks.
