Heartland house leveled by early morning fire

A Heartland house is in ruins following an early morning fire.

Firefighters arrived on the scene of a house fire just west of the Kirksville city limits on Highway 11 just after 2 a.m. Thursday morning to find the house engulfed in flames.

The home was on the market and therefore vacant, but the fire leveled the structure and little remains expect for the foundation.

The latest real estate listing had an asking price of more than $240,000.

The state fire marshal was called and ruled the cause of the fire â??undetermined."

Firefighters from Novinger, Northern, Eastern, and Southwest fire departments battled the flames with assistance from a tanker from the La Plata department.

While firefighters were unable to save the home, Novinger/ Northern Fire District Barry Mitchell says when Firefighters arrived, the immediate threat was to nearby property.

A grass fire was making its way to another home, threatening a shed. Firefighters were able to control the grass fire, saving the property to the east of the home.
