Heartland murder trial nears end

A northeast Missouri murder case is nearing its end in federal court in Saint Louis.

Kay Young, 57, and Katherine Mock, 58, are each charged with murder for hire and conspiracy to commit murder for hire in connection with the 2006 killing of Young's husband Melvin Griesbauer. The incident occurred on the property owned by the couple near Novinger.

The prosecution rested its case Friday morning, while the defense wrapped up its case this afternoon after calling just two witnesses. Federal officials tell KTVO closing arguments are now scheduled to begin Monday morning.

The prosecution alleges that the murder was a plot by the two women to get money from Griesbauerâ??s life insurance policies. Authorities say those insurance policies totaled over $700,000.

If convicted each defendant could face up to life in federal prison and fines up to $250,000.
