Heartland students awarded by FFA
Several Heartland students are competing in the 84th Missouri FFA convention this weekend and many of them are knocking out the competition.
Samantha Coulson, of the Green City FFA Chapter, received the first-place Missouri FFA Specialty Crop Production Entrepreneurship and Placement Combined Proficiency Award. Coulson is a junior at Green City R-I High School. She is the daughter of Eric and Deborah Coulson. Her FFA advisors are Jonna Ayers and Rick Ayers.
According to the Joyce Cutright with the Missouri State FFA, Coulson's supervised agriculture experience involved growing and selling a variety of mums. She learned how to select hardy and popular variety of mums, protect against insects, and overcome a limited market.
John Newland of the Kirksville FFA Chapter, won the Missouri FFA Agricultural Sales Entrepreneurship Proficiency Award at the 84th Missouri FFA Convention. Newland is a senior at Kirksville AVTS. He is the son of BJ and Cheryl Newland. His FFA advisors are Jason Dimmitt, Mary Leykamp and Tom Primmer. Newlandâ??s supervised agricultural experience consisted of the buying and repairing of farm equipment for resale. He sells to customers in all 50 states, Canada and Mexico. Newland also repairs machinery for local famers.
Newland has received several awards from the Kirkville FFA, including Star Agribusiness and Star Chapter Farmer. He also received grand champion in the agricultural mechanics career development event at the district level.
Joel Sevits of Novinger, Mo. received the second-place Missouri FFA Turf Grass Management Entrepreneurship and Placement Combined Proficiency Award. Sevits is a junior at Adair Co. R-I High School. He is the son of Jami and Janine Sevits. He is a member of the Adair County R-I FFA Chapter. His advisor is Burnie Schneiderheinze.
According to the Joyce Cutright with the Missouri State FFA, Sevitsâ?? Supervised Agricultural Experience includes the ownership of S&R Lawn Care. In addition to lawn care, S&R Lawn Care also provides landscaping and snow removal services. Sevits also assists his family in their Limousine cattle and row-crop operations.
The Milan FFA Chapter placed third in the FFA Agricultural Issues Forum Career Development Event (CDE) at the 84th Missouri FFA Convention. Milan team members were Tristan Fowler, Ryan Kuehn, Nathan Miller, Aaron Richardson, Drew Russell and Derek White. The Milan advisor Jack Green and Jarred Sayre.
Teams in the Agricultural Issues Forum CDE created a presentation that focused on an important agricultural issue faced by their community. Team members then give their presentation at least five times to community organizations before competing in the event.
