Hog farm agrees to pay fine, improve after spill in southeast Iowa

A southeast Iowa hog producer that spilled thousands of gallons of hog manure into a dry creek in November has reached an agreement with state regulators to pay a fine and make improvements to prevent future discharges.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says the Keosauqua area hog farm owned by Carlysle, Ill.-based The Maschhoffs, has agreed to pay a $10,000 fine.

The farm also will repair manure collection equipment and make other changes recommended by an engineer.

Bill Ehm, the DNR's environmental services administrator says the agreement is the most effective way to avoid more spills.

Environmental group Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement says the DNR should force the company to obtain a Clean Water Act permit and anything less isn't enough.
