On Monday, our nation honored the fallen servicemen and women who fought for our freedom.

The Veterans Organizations of Adair County held a Memorial Day ceremony to remember those who have died in our nation's service. The ceremony was held at the Rieger Armory in Kirksville.

Lieutenant Colonel Steven Petersen was the speaker and addressed the importance of recognizing why we have freedom.

"It's important to take a deliberate step to remember those folks that give us those freedoms and that's what this day is about," said Lt. Col. Steven Petersen.

State Representative Nate Walker was in attendance. He says it's important for everyone to honor our soldiers.

"Well as the speaker said today: freedom is not free," said Walker. "I think it's important for everybody to pay tribute to fallen comrades who have served our country and to people who serve in our country, but it's important for us to remember what Memorial Day is about."
