Dating back as early as the second century, iron plates or rings were nailed on horses' feet in Western Asia and Eastern Europe.
Today the game of horseshoes has evolved.
At the Moose Lodge in Kirksville a group of people were enjoying a horseshoe tournament.
The Moose Legion chair, Ray Russell says it's to increase membership with the Moose Legion.
"It hasn't been done for a while and I know there's a lot of moose members that were active in horseshoes," said Russell. "I was king of hoping we could get them back in, but it is hot, so we're going to continue it. I think we're going to have another one in October when it cools off, so it'll be co-ed teams and much better turn out."
Organizers say they'll plan another horseshoe tournament in October.
