House fire in Ottumwa displaces six residents out of their home

Investigators try to determine cause of weekend house fire.

A house fire in Ottumwa displaces six residents out of their home.

Around 2 a.m. on Sunday, fire crews responded to this house located at 1630 Locust Street. No one was in the home at the time of the blaze, and the American Red Cross is assisting the occupants of the house at this time. Most of the fire damage is on the backside of the house with less damage to the front and sides of the structure. The Iowa State Fire's Marshal's Office was assisting the Ottumwa Fire Department with the investigation on Monday, but the cause has not yet been determined.

â??When a crew arrived on scene the whole back of the house was completely engulfed,â?? Fire Chief Tony Miller said. â??They had heavy smoke, heavy fire coming from the backside. Before [crews] arrived on the scene, they saw some of the smoke and some of the flame. We were here approximately two and a half hours, and the cause of the fire is under investigation right now.â??

Chief Miller says this is the 30th structure fire this year. Investigators expect to determine the cause within a week or so.
