Iowa county to begin issuing community ID cards

Johnson County is set to accept applications for and begin issuing community ID cards.

According to county officials, residents will be able to start applying July 17 for IDs.

The Johnson County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved creation of the ID program in April. It was proposed last year by Iowa City's Human Rights Commission and Ad Hoc Diversity Committee to help give access to local services to immigrants and others who do not have documentation required to obtain a state-issued ID.

Johnson County Auditor Travis Weipert said he hopes that over 1,000 cards will be issued right away. The community cards will cost $8 for adults and $4 for children.

According to Weipert, the county's cost for the ID program is between $15,000 and $20,000.
