Ottumwa residents had the chance to meet the two candidates seeking the Democratic nomination for Iowa Senate for the November General Election.
The Ottumwa League of Women Voters sponsored Thursday nights special candidate forum. Candidates Tom Rubel and Steve Siegel met with and took questions from community members.
The two Ottumwa Democrats answered questions and expressed concerns about topics ranging from raising the minimum wage to improving education. Both Rubel and Siegel say that a public forum is crucial when electing political officials.
"This is important work that we do at the State House and it's important that our citizens of Southeast Iowa take a high interest in this," said Candidate Rubel. "Well this is the only one that is happening this primary, so folks have access to meet whenever they want, but to have the two of us side by side, this is the only opportunity," added Candidate Siegel.
The winner of the primary election will take on Republican Incumbent State Senator Mark Chelgren of Ottumwa. The general election rolls around in November.
