Iowa Department of Transportation urges patience while traveling this weekend

Fri, 23 May 2014 22:16:31 GMT — If you have plans to travel this weekend, but sure to pack your patience. Memorial Day weekend always brings heavy traffic to the highways and this year looks to be no different. The major project to look out for is resurfacing on Iowa 1 from Iowa City to Washington. The Iowa Department of Transportation urges drivers to be alert and aware when driving through any construction or traffic. The most common type of crash in a work zone is being rear-ended, so be sure to leave plenty of space between you and the person in front of you. "Just because you see a roadwork ahead sign and nobody's there, you've still got to obey speed limits, because violations will still be in effect," said Jason Huddle, Transportation Planner with the Iowa DOT. The good news for local drivers is that Iowa 147 north of Ottumwa was re-opened to traffic Thursday.
