Iowa school employee accused of sexual abuse

A man employed by the school district in Montezuma has been accused of sexually abusing two minors in 2012.

The Poweshiek County Sheriff's Office says 28-year-old Derek John Bates was arrested Friday on two counts of third-degree sexual abuse and one count of pattern, practice or scheme to engage in sexual exploitation by a school employee. Court records do not list an attorney.

Bates is accused of having sexual contact with two minors between March and July of 2012. At the time, Bates was an employee of the Montezuma Community School District and both minors were students enrolled in the district. The alleged incidents did not take place on school grounds.

It's unclear if Bates is still employed with the district, or what his job was in 2012.
