Iowa spokesman: 2 dead in southern plane crash

UPDATE: The Wayne County Sheriff's Office said in a news release Monday night that 53-year-old John Joseph Wood and 51-year-old Resia Lynn Wood, both of Colorado Springs, Colorado, died in the Saturday afternoon crash in Wright Township, near Russell.

Authorities say the names are being released based on evidence collected at the scene of the crash and communication with family members.

The National Transportation Safety Board is leading an investigation into the crash. A spokesman says a preliminary report will be released in a few days, but a full report with details about what caused the crash may take about a year.

The crash involved a single-engine RV-7A aircraft.


The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a plane crash that killed two people in Wayne County.

An Iowa Department of Public Safety spokesman says the Iowa State Patrol was called to the crash
Saturday afternoon. He says the crash
happened in southern Iowa near Russell.

The spokesman says he doesn't know the victims' identities or what caused the crash
. It's unclear what type of plane
it was.

He says the county sheriff department and the state patrol are assisting the FAA with the investigation.
