KTVO caught up with retiring Iowa U.S. Senator Tom Harkin Saturday as he toured the Job Corps facilities in Ottumwa to talk about some hot button topics.
Harkin said he believes the 7 million estimate of those enrolled in Obamacare to be legitimate.
He also added that an additional 3 million have enrolled in Medicaid bringing the total enrollment to 10 million.
"And that's 10 million people that never had health insurance," said Harkin. "So yes, we had some problems in rolling this out. Whenever you change a system as big as healthcare, of course you're going to have some problems. But the fact is 10 million people now have health insurance that never had it before. And we're not going to let it be taken away."
The senator also said he's pleased with Congressman Bruce Braley's campaign to take his open spot in the U.S. Senate.
Harkin said Braley's recent controversial comments about Iowa U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley and Iowa farmers are just a bump in the road.
He said as people get to know Braley more during his campaign they will understand how dedicated the congressman is to serving the public.
