Tue, 31 Dec 2013 14:43:48 GMT — A Burlington man has been given five years in prison instead of the probation that prosecutors had agreed to recommend for his sexual assaults of a teenager. The Hawk Eye newspaper says 42-year-old John Layman Jr. seemed surprised by the sentence on Monday. Prosecutors, Layman's attorney and the Iowa Corrections Department agreed that they'd recommend that Layman be allowed to plead guilty to a reduced felony and be placed on probation for five years. But Judge Michael Schilling rejected the agreement, saying that assaulting minors strikes at the "heart of our society." Prosecutors say the assaults on the now 17-year-old began when the child was 13. Layman has 30 days to appeal the sentence.
