Secretary of State Jason Kander announced Thursday that the Missouri State Library, a division of his office, has awarded Gorin R-III School District a grant of $2,000 to expand educational resources available to Missouri students in the schoolâ??s library.
â??This grant will broaden the range of educational materials available to students, particularly in subjects related to science, technology, engineering and math,â?? Kander said. â??Iâ??m proud my office is able to increase learning opportunities in the educational areas that will fuel the jobs of the next generation.â??
The grant, formally called a School Nonfiction Collection Development Grant, provides funds to public school libraries, which then purchase materials and services for learning that support science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs. It is funded by the Library Services and Technology Act through the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services, which is the primary source of federal support for the nationâ??s 122,000 libraries and 17,500 museums.
In the 2014 Fiscal Year, the Missouri State Library has approved a total of 53 grant applications, distributing $476,449 in federal awards to libraries throughout Missouri.
