Kids learning the basics of bicycle safety

Children learned about bicycle safety at a Bicycle Rodeo in Rotary Park.

Children enjoyed the nice weather outside Sunday afternoon all while learning about safety.

Truman State University's Exercise Science Department in association with Kirksville Parks and Recreation held a Bicycle Rodeo at Rotary Park in Kirksville.

Parents brought their kids to have their bikes' breaks and tires inspected while also learning important bicycle safety skills including basic traffic interaction, rules of the road, starting and stopping their bikes, and proper helmet fitting.

"Since it's getting warmer outside, kids are going to be out riding their bikes and outside playing. So we are making sure they know safety precautions while outside playing," said Event Safety Chairman Jared Stumpe.

Parents also had the opportunity to register their kids' bikes with the Kirksville Police Department at the event.

About 20 to 30 children participated in the event and said they had fun riding their bikes around the park.
