Kirksville firefighters are getting a new boss.

The city recently hired Tom Collins of Independence, Missouri to head the Kirksville Fire Department.

Collins is a 30-year veteran with the Independence Fire Department.

He replaces former Fire Chief Randy Behrens, who retired in late October.

Collins was chosen from a pool of 23 applicants from across the country.

Kirksville City Manager Mari Macomber told KTVO all of the candidates had a lot of experience, but Collins had a couple of qualities that made him stand out from the rest.

"Mr. Collins is from a larger city,â?? said Macomber. â??He did not jump from one place to another. A lot of his experience is in Independence. He is passionate about training. I think his communication skills are really what we need."

Macomber said the new fire chief seems to have a good grasp of how to maintain consistency from one shift to another.

Monday, February 3, 2014, will be Collins' first day on the job at the Kirksville Fire Department.
