Kirksville teacher speaks about foster children at board meeting
KIRKSVILLE, MO. —
There are about 102 foster children in Kirksville and almost 150 in Adair county.
During the open forum at Kirksville's R-III Board of Education meeting, Kirksville Pubic School teacher, Erin McAlvany addressed her concerns for how to care for foster kids in the Heartland.
McAlvany is a science teacher, but she is also a foster mother of 4.
McAlvany wanted to bring up the challenges foster children go through from dealing with trauma and having depression or serious medical conditions.
McAlvany said those types of experiences can affect foster kids behavior in the classroom.
The board says anyone who would like to speak at their meetings is welcomed to attend.
Those who wish to speak are advised to give their name and topic of discussion to the board secretary before each meeting.
