People are taking time on this Veterans Day to thank those who have or are serving our country.

In Kirksville, the Adair County Veterans Organization hosted a Veterans Day Ceremony Monday morning at the Rieger Armory.

Veterans service organizations gathered, along with local officials, to celebrate veterans on this day.

This year's featured speaker was Pastor Jim Pitney of Kirksville who talked about his service in Iraq as a USAF Chaplin.

"I really enjoyed being here today and speaking to our veterans. It was a real honor, especially thinking about the families who made the ultimate sacrifice and the Gold Star families who rose when they were recognized," Pitney said.

For the first time this year, instead of giving a moment of silence, bells were rung as people remembered and honored those who have served our nation in uniform.

There was also a 21 gun salute for the fallen and moment of applause for all the local veterans who attended the event.
