La Plata community honors area veterans
LA PLATA, Mo. —
Although Veterans Day will officially be observed on Saturday, November 11, a number of special ceremonies were held on Friday.
Students and community members gathered in La Plata to honor all who have served.
Those in the crowd stood and applauded veterans as they made their way through the high school gym.
During the ceremony, students performed songs and teachers offered readings.
Colonel Angela (Pippin) Giddings served as keynote speaker.
Giddings is currently the Deputy Director of Analysis Foundations and Integration at the U.S. Air Force Headquarters at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
Prior to her service with the Air Force, Giddings was a student at La Plata.
She was the valedictorian of the class of 1989.
During her speech, she told students that growing up in La Plata helped prepare her for her time in the service.
Giddings says the close-knit community was like an extended family - much like her colleagues in the Air Force.
"You almost can't turn around without somebody who knows you, knows what unit you're in, knows who your boss is, your coworkers - you can't get away with anything."
Friday's ceremony also featured a slideshow, which showcased photos of local veterans.
Nearly 250 photos were included of veterans who graduated from La Plata, or have a tie to the community.
