Levee maintenance is an ongoing concern in the City of Bridges and the city works each year to maintain the levee and to keep within the Corps of Engineersâ?? standards.
This week the armored part of the levee on the south side of the Des Moines River is being cleared of vegetation.
By clearing that out, it keeps small trees and weeds from growing there.
â??And essentially that's one of the requirements for a rock face surface like that. Once you get vegetation growing in there, it breaks up the surface of the underlying dirt and can cause that to wash out so it's really important to maintain that,â?? said Tom Rodgers, Ottumwa Public Information Officer.
The next step will be to come in with an herbicide to know down any remaining weeds. During that process, fisherman who fish along that section will be asked to fish elsewhere during this work.
