Local food banks prepare for holiday season

It's getting close to Thanksgiving and for the Food Bank of Southern Iowa, it's the busiest time of the year.

As the holiday season approaches, the food bank is looking for Thanksgiving items like frozen turkeys, green beans, potatoes and gravy mix. They're always looking for donations of canned fruits and vegetables, and boxed items like mac and cheese.

Since the Food Bank of Southern Iowa distributes all donations to area food pantries, the weeks approaching Thanksgiving are always the busiest.

"Actually it's the busiest right now because the way we're structured, we actually deliver to our agencies before the holidays get here, to get ready for the holidays," said Neil Abbott, Executive Director of the Food Bank of Southern Iowa. "Typically, I think our Thanksgiving rush is a little busier than our Christmas rush, but we will have another one during the Christmas season."

The food bank is always accepting food and monetary donations, and you can bring them to their office located at 705 West Main Street in Ottumwa.
