Health officials are seeking grant money to better detect lead poisoning.
Wapello County Public Health treats patients with lead poisoning. Ottumwa's Health Department handles and identifies the substance inside of the home. Together they work to educate the community about the dangers.
??The reason that we have so much of it here is that we have a lot of older housing in Ottumwa, and lead paint was pretty prevalent prior to the 70s,?? Jody Gates, Health and Inspections Director said. ??Additive was put into paint because it made it stronger it didn't chip as much.??
The funds come from the Iowa Department of Public Health. If the grant is accepted, it would go towards better education about lead poisoning and how to prevent it.
