Local kids acting their hearts out

Kirksville's Parks and Recreation Department is hosting the Children's Theatre Camp through June 20.

Local Heartland kids are now attempting to bring Broadway to Kirksville.

Kirksville's Parks and Recreation Department is hosting the Children's Theatre Camp at the Ray Klinginsmith Amphitheatre.

The group is meeting three hours a day for the next two weeks. It includes children from grades one through five.

Organizers hope the children learn different aspects of theatre production like costumes, sets and lighting, but most importantly they want them to have fun.

"We're actually doing a musical this year since it's our tenth anniversary. It's called "Aesop's Fables: The Musical." And it just takes some of the various "Aesop's Fables" and turns them into a show that the kids are going to put on," said Recreation Specialist Heather Darrah.

"Aesop's Fables: The Musical" will debut on June 20 at 7:00 p.m. at the amphitheatre.

The show is open and free to the public.
