Local schools prepare to introduce archery in PE classes
Teachers in the Ottumwa area spent their day learning in class on Friday instead of teaching it.
The Iowa DNR trained some local school districts how to introduce archery to their PE classrooms.
The training will also allow students in the area to compete in state wide archer competitions. For those worried about the safety of the sport in classrooms, DNR officials say they have a good history record.
â??Actually archery is the second safest sport there is in the physical education classroom, the first safest sport that they do is ping pong or table tennis so we're pretty proud that archery can be the second safest sport in the nation actually so we're really proud of that,â?? said DNR representative Donise Peterson.
According to Peterson, anyone can be an archery coach as long as they complete the eight hour training course.
