The Maasdam Barns hosted their season opener on Saturday. Just off the bypass of Highway 34, when you hit the city of Fairfield, stand three barns and a welcome center, where youâ??ll get an early 20th Century history lesson. The barns are a significant illustration of not only agriculture in the 1910s-1930s, but also an industrial revolution. A conservation committee has been working diligently over the past several years to refurbish and preserve antique farming equipment and household items of the Masdaam Family.
â??We encourage people to visit the Masdaam Barns here, Maasdam Barns Conservationist Jim Salts said. â??We have a lot of things you'd be interested in, most notably the Louden Corporation-- the history of the Louden Corporation here in Fairfield, Iowa, the Truman Wagon Works in Fairfield. We have our barns open: the Show Barn, Mare Barn and the Stallion Barn. We've been restored and we have displays in there.â??
New additions to the barn this year, is a windmill over 60-years-old, and the barn will soon house chickens. The Masdaam Barns are open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
