Make Ottumwa Shine week helping to beautify the community

Itâ??s finally starting to feel like spring and this is the time when people are starting to spend more time outside and enjoying the sunshine.

Itâ??s also time for Make Ottumwa Shine week.

Starting Sunday and running through next Friday, Ottumwa residents are being asked to â??adoptâ?? an area around the community to pick up trash.

Every year, hundreds of volunteers come out to help beautify their community.

â??It gives the community kind of a jumpstart on spring to pick up trash and litter. And it's sort of amazing the difference a littered roadside or littered neighborhood and what an hours worth of work can make a difference in the appearance,â?? said Jody Gates, Director of Health and Inspections for city of Ottumwa.

Gates said there are more than 100 areas around Ottumwa that are up for adoption.

After you have adopted a site, you will be given purple trash bags to fill up with trash. When you are finished cleaning up, Health and Inspections crews will then pick up the bags.
