Man's body recovered from water in Ottumwa
Update: The Iowa Medical Examinerâ??s Office notified Ottumwa Police Friday, that the body found in the Des Moines River on September 14 was positively identified as Michael John Schorg, 47, of Ottumwa.
The death has been ruled an accidental drowning.
During the course of the investigation, officers located fishing equipment along the river that belonged to the victim.
Based on the scene, police speculate that the victim accidently fell into the river and drowned.
Law enforcement officials have confirmed the discovery of a body in Wapello County.
The Ottumwa Police Department duty sergeant says the body was recovered from the water at the Blackhawk access point off Quincy Drive near the boat ramp at approximately 12:21 p.m. on Saturday.
Both the subjectâ??s identity and the cause of death are unknown at this time. Authorities say the body appears to be that of a middle-aged white male, which has been sent to the medical examinerâ??s office for an autopsy. The matter remains under investigation.
