Martha the talking dog to visit Ottumwa Public Library

A popular Iowa Public Television character will be visiting children at the Ottumwa Public Library Friday.

Martha the talking dog from the show Martha Speaks! will be joining the children for story hour at 10:30 a.m.

They will be reading books and watching DVDs about Martha and how she learned to talk.

These books and DVDs were donated by IPTV to help support early literacy.

"They provide great entertainment; entertainment that is educational for our earliest children," said Ottumwa Public Library Director Sonja Ferrell. "And that provides a jumping off point for them for literacy onward down their life. If we can catch them early and teach them to read and get them interested in reading, we will have them hooked for life."

Goodies will also be given to children in attendance.

IPTV has partnered with Ottumwa and five other Iowa communities. Together they participate in early literacy projects such as this one.
