Middle school musical puts on Broadway-like play
The drama department at Evans Middle School brought a taste of Broadway to Ottumwa.
Thoroughly Modern Millie is a musical set in 1922, a lively time in our history. The play is about a girl named Millie Dillmount who travels to New York City from a small town in Kansas.
She joins the "modern crowd" searching for a job and rich man to marry. Along the way, Millie meets and falls in love with a boy named Jimmy and helps unfold the criminal exploits-- of Mrs. Meers. The play's director says casting began in December, and it took nearly 40 cast and crew members to make the production come together.
"We're using what is called a junior version of the show," Director Pam De Boer said. "But it is has all of the main songs and it has the whole story. It's a wonderful way for kids this age to really truly get a Broadway experience. We have dancing, singing, set changes that fly in and out during a song just like they would on a New York stage."
