Milan children lace up new shoes for the new school year

Green Hills Head Start (Milan, MO) students enjoy their new shoes provided by Shoes from the Heart.

Milan children are lacing up a new pair of shoes to start the school year off right.

The Green Hills Head Start Center in Milan welcomed the Shoes from the Heart organization Wednesday morning.

Smiles were bright and excitement filled the air as 32 kids received a brand new pair of shoesâ?|for free.

â??Iâ??m a bunch excited and they look pretty,â?? said Brieann, Green Hills Head Start student.

Since their establishment in 2012, the local organization has provided shoes to 25 counties across the Heartland.

Last year, Shoes from the Heart was able to hand out 1,100 pairs of shoes.

â??It was wonderfulâ?|It was,â?? said Linda Buckner, Green Hills Head Start teacher. â??Itâ??s the first time theyâ??ve been to the Milan center so it was a really big deal for us.â??

Not only does the new pair of shoes bring a smile to a childâ??s face but it helps lessen a parentâ??s financial stress.

â??Itâ??s a good program especially this time of year especially for parents that have more than one child because Lord knows shoes are not cheap whatsoever,â?? said Mandy Morris, Green Hills Head Start Parent.

The local organization is making its rounds to other Head Start centers in nine counties.

The Green Hills center in Milan was stop number two.

â??We were blessed that they were able to come here for our kids,â?? said Buckner.
