Wed, 09 Jul 2014 20:05:15 GMT — Milestones Area Agency on Aging is seeking volunteers for two programs. The first is the Senior Medicare Patrol. Volunteers in this national organization work to help inform senior citizens in the area about healthcare fraud and scams. To sign up and for more information, interested individuals can call Milestones at (641) 682-2270 extension 416.The second organization looking for local volunteers is the Volunteer Ombudsman Program. Members of this group are responsible for visiting area nursing homes to make sure longtime residents are receiving proper care. To register, call Merea Bentroll and Sarah Hinzman at (515) 344-0052 or (866) 236-1403. There will be a meeting in Ottumwa on July 30.Joan Nydle, the Milestones family caregiver specialist, says being a part of these two organizations provides many benefits to the volunteers as well."It is very rewarding when you have to help someone, an elderly person who was very flusterated, very worried about something that is wrong that you're able to help them and to see the light in their eyes and the smile on them to know that you have done something active to help them have a better life in their elder years," said Nydle.
