Model trains take center stage at Great River Railroad Train Show

A hobby lost in the technology age was brought to the forefront this weekend during the Great River Railroad Train Show.

The Great River Railroad Club was established over 40 years ago.

The club usually brings their model to Ottumwa this time of year.

They employ two layouts: a modular layout they travel with and a permanent layout located in Burlington where the club meets.

Modules have been donated or built over the years by members of the club.

Vice-President Brett Cox has been involved with model trains for over forty years.

He said it's a rewarding way to spend time.

"It's a great hobby to get involved in," said Cox. "You learn all aspects of construction by constructing the modules as well as electrical from having to wire up the module. And basically it's just a very good, diverse hobby to be in."

There are five to six active members in the club.

They meet once a week on Monday nights from 7 to 9 p.m.
