In an effort to bring awareness to the intersection at Route M and U.S. 63 in Atlanta, MoDOT will install flashing yellow lights on and warning signs on US 63 within the next few weeks.
"This is a temporary tactic to help improve safety in the short-term," explained MoDOT Area Engineer Brian Haeffner. "We are working with area residents to design a permanent solution and expect to have a major improvement by the end of next year," he added.
Haeffner said at a recent public meeting local residents asked for the yellow flashing lights until something more permanent could be done.
Following a safety audit in 2012, MoDOT installed red flashers on the stop signs on Route M on both sides of U.S. 63, as well as rumble strips to remind drivers to stop, and additional "stop ahead" signs before the stop signs.
Accidents that have occurred at this intersection in the last year primarily have been the result of drivers failing to stop at the stop sign, or yielding in the median crossover between U.S. 63.
