Mom: Toddler thrown twice, knocked unconscious by Milan man
MILAN, Mo. —
Authorities have arrested a man they say threw a toddler -- twice -- sending the child to the hospital with serious head injuries.
Shane Stephenson, 27, of Milan, Mo., is behind bars and charged with child abuse and first-degree domestic assault, both class A felonies and punishable by up to 30 years in prison.
According to the probable cause statement, the mother of a two-year-old from Milan told the highway patrol that Stephenson threw her son twice Saturday night -- once causing his head to strike the floor, and a second time hitting his head into a wall. Stephenson said the child was unresponsive after that.
The toddler was flown from Sullivan County Memorial to Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Columbia, and from there to the University of Missouri Hospital.
Medical personnel told troopers that the two-year-old boy was knocked unconscious from an acute cranial hemorrhage caused by the head injury.
Stephenson’s bond was set at $100,000.
