Tuesday, October 1st is the first day the North East Community Action Corporation (NECAC) will take applications for winter utility assistance.
These applications are for qualifying senior citizens and disabled people. The corporation has programs that assist with paying part of the energy bills of income-qualifying people.
Households may receive up to $450 each, depending on the type of heating source.
â??Usually there are income guidelines for the low income and elderly for the month,â?? said Terri Laughlin, Maconâ??s NECAC coordinator. â??In October it's for the elderly and handicapped.â??
Individuals who receive a utility shut-off notice also may qualify for assistance through the energy crisis intervention program.
Last year during the winter heating assistance season, NECAC served more than 4,000 households.
NECACâ??s applications will be accepted by mail or in person from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at NECAC Service Centers in each of the agencyâ??s counties.
