About 600,000 deaths in the United States are caused by heart disease every year, and one local organization is working to bring that number down.
NEMO Heart Health is holding AED (Automated external defibrillator) demonstrations at the Hy-Vee in Kirksville every Saturday in February as part of National Heart Awareness Month.
Their goal is to help everyone feel comfortable using the devices in the event that somebody has a heart attack.
There are over 100 AEDs in businesses and schools throughout the community, and board members believe if you can get hands on experience now, you will be much more confident in a crisis.
??We want people to not be afraid of AEDs we want them to feel like if they saw someone in need that they would have the boldness and comfort level to go and grab it out of the cabinet and take it and actually use it on the person that needs the help,?? said Lisa Archer, Board Secretary for NEMO Heart Health.
In addition to the AED demonstrations, on February 22nd NEMO Heart Health will also hold a ??Celebrity Stride,?? to raise awareness about the importance of regular exercise in preventing heart disease.
