When Tenco announced the facility would be cutting back on hours in order to stay open, Ottumwa resident Connie Cronbaugh-Collins said she told her friends someone needed to step up and open a new redemption center. Finally, she decided she would be the one to do it.
Can Do Redemption Center has been accepting cans for the last few days during a "soft" opening, but the center's official opening is on Wednesday. The center is located at the Food Bank of Southern Iowa's old location on Gateway Drive.
The center is opening with two co-owners and three staff members and Cronbaugh-Collins said they'll have see how overwhelmed they get with redemptions and go from there. Getting the facility off the ground isn't easy, but Cronbaugh-Collins said she hopes it can help the community.
"I am not going to get rich by no means at a penny a can, but at least it's going to offer the community some place for them to go because we tried to take the hours and arrange them so that everybody is able to utilize this," she said.
Can Do accepts any can or bottle with a refund label on it and there is no limit to how much you can redeem at one time. You can also sign up for a pre-count program to make redeeming cans faster and easier.
Can Do is open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday.
You can also contact the center at 641-777-8957.
