New Ottumwa elementary school almost has a name

Outside construction on Ottumwa's elementary school should be complete by winter.

Ottumwa's new elementary school is not only on track to open its doors to students in August 2013, it's also close to getting a name.

Several months ago, the Ottumwa School District took open submissions for name suggestions on their website. The school board discussed around 35 entries that stood out and eventually decided to eliminate any names with directions -- north, south, east or west. The school board members also decided not to go with any submissions with personal names.

"We have so many leaders that have impacted Ottumwa that to narrow it to one, it was difficult, so they set aside names also," said Dr. Davis Eidahl, Superintendent of the Ottumwa School District. "What was discussed [Monday] night at a work session were two names that rose to the top - Timberview and Liberty - and so currently, they're discussing those names and hopefully by November we'll have that building named."

Outside construction on the building, barring any last-minute changes from Mother Nature, should be complete by winter, and crews will work on inside construction through the winter season.

The district is also working with companies to supply technology and furniture for the building, so that is will be ready to welcome its first students next fall.
