New sidewalks will help Kirksville students be more active
The city of Kirksville has recently installed new sidewalks thanks to state grants.
More sidewalks in the city have given the Kirksville School District an idea for a new program next year. The program is called "The Walking School Bus".
Parents will be able to drop off students at locations near the schools.
They'll be walking anywhere from a quarter of a mile to a one mile distance.
Kirksville R-III Schools Superintendent Pat Williams said this will be done to help promote the importance of being active.
"I think it's a great start. Get this generation of students more accustomed to the fact you can walk to places and be accompanied by adults. It's a great activity to encourage fitness," Williams said.
There will be adults helping to walk the kids and keep them under supervision.
The program will be implemented for grades kindergarten through eighth.
