New walking club helps others improve heart health

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States, killing around 600,000 people every year.

NEMO Heart Health is not only encouraging, but now empowering the citizens of northeast Missouri to improve their heart health.

Every Monday night a new NEMO Heart Healthy Club will meet and encourage people to walk.

"Walking is the least expensive method of exercise out there. You get a good pair of tennis shoes and hit the ground. That walking club is our hope to kick people into that gear of doing non-competitive walking for your health every day," said Lisa Archer of NEMO Heart Health.

The club is free and open to the public.

Maps of walking paths around the community will be provided to participants at the meetings.

The group will be meeting at the Northeast Regional Medical Center's Health and Fitness center on the south end of Baltimore Street in Kirksville every Monday from 6-8 p.m.
