New York artist visiting her alma mater

New York artist and Truman State University alumna Lori Nix talks to art students Monday night.

A well known New York artist is back to visit her alma mater in the Heartland this week.

St. Joseph native and Truman State University alumna Lori Nix came to Kirksville Monday night to talk about her art work to art students.

Nix makes diorama models and photographs them.

Nix has built everything from a broadway theater to a garden to a shoe store to a laundry mat to even disasters.

She said gets her ideas from her own life memories.

"I'm a product of the Midwest. I grew up where tornadoes, floods, blizzards are natural seasonal occurrences. It's in my blood. As a child experiencing that was fun. That gives a child's perspective...a blizzard is fun," Nix said.

Nix has been doing this type of work since 1997 and has won numerous awards for her work.

She says this is her passion and that the creativity is the best part.
