The North Central Missouri Chapter of the American Red Cross hosted the annual 'Heroes Recognition Event.'
The event recognized individuals that have helped out members of the community in a time of need. Awards were presented in the following categories: Good Samaritan, Education, Public safety, and Family hero.
The winners of the awards are as follows: Good Samaritan - Bob Allen (City of Kirksville Animal Control Officer) Education - Dani Fromm (Scotland County R-I Schools) Public Safety - Dennis VanSickel (FF for Kirksville Fire Dept., EMT for Adair County Ambulance District and Fire Chief for Southwest Rural Adair County #3) Family Hero - Carla and Gary Mayer (Hurdland, Mo.)
Those who attended also heard from guest speaker, Karla Long, a long-time employee with the Red Cross. She spoke on how it is beneficial for local communities to come together when a disaster strikes.
"You just never know when a disaster will strike locally. Single family fires we respond to those, we respond to flooding, any type of disaster that has affected folks in our counties," said Lisa Lene, with the American Red Cross.
The North Central Missouri Chapter of the Red Cross is always looking for volunteers. If interested in volunteering, please contact Lisa Lene or visit the North Central Missouri Chapter office located at 315 S. Franklin Street in Kirksville.
