Northeast Missouri murder suspect to await trial behind bars
KIRKSVILLE, Mo. —
A northeast Missouri murder suspect will await his trial behind bars.
Joshua Atkins, 31, of Kirksville, was sentenced to seven years in the Department of Corrections on a domestic assault conviction stemming from an incident in November 2015. According to Adair County Prosecuting Attorney Matt Wilson, Atkins was initially placed on probation for assaulting his roommate at the time. Tuesday, Atkins surrendered his probation and was sentenced to the maximum seven years.
In March, Atkins was arrested for allegedly shooting and killing Steven Filczer. He was charged with first-degree murder.
Atkins’ murder case was moved to Livingston County in July.
