Northeast Regional Medical Center welcomes first baby of the new year

Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville welcomed the first baby of the New Year.

Early Wednesday afternoon, the hospital welcomed Herizen Lyn, weighing in at 7 pounds and 7 ounces. Herizen was to be due in the last few days of December, but waited until the first day of the new year to make an appearance.

The growing family is happy to have an even more exciting reason to celebrate the new year.

'It's pretty cool to have a New Year's baby. We are just glad she came, and she's all healthy, and it's going to definitely be a New Years celebration every year now," said Russell Sandoval, Herizen's father.

Nurses at the hospital say that having a baby born on January 1st is a rare occurrence, but is always exciting when it happens.
