OPD: Woman threatened to light boyfriend on fire

Donetta Rae Akers, 57, of Ottumwa/Wapello County Jail

An Ottumwa woman is behind bars this week, accused of threatening to light her boyfriend on fire.

Donetta Rae Akers, 57, was arrested and charged Sunday with Simple Assault, First-Degree Arson, First-Degree Harassment and Domestic Abuse.

Ottumwa police officers were called to the disturbance on Hancock Street around 8 Sunday morning.

Online court documents show Akers and the man were arguing when police say she poured gasoline on him and his motorcycle with one hand, while holding a lighter with the other.

Police added that Akers also threatened to hurt the man's teenage son.

Akers has since pleaded not guilty to these crimes. She's still in custody at the Wapello County jail on a $25,000 bond.

First-Degree Arson is a Class B felony, punishable by up to 25 years in prison.
