Ottumwa caretaker accused of sexually abusing patient

Cynthia Kopp, 26, of Ottumwa/Wapello County Jail

An Ottumwa caretaker admitted to having sex with a mentally disabled patient during her shift Monday.

Ottumwa police arrested Cynthia Kopp, 26, Wednesday and charged her with Dependent Adult Abuse.

Police say Kopp was a professionally employed caretaker when she had consensual sex with the adult victim more than once.

Lt. Jason Bell told KTVO Ottumwa police opened the investigation after the Iowa Department of Human Services reported the incident.

Kopp was released on bail earlier this week. She has pleaded not guilty to the crime.

Dependent Adult Abuse is a serious misdemeanor by up to a year in jail.

Kopp's preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 18, 2017.
